Linux is an open source computer operating system. Like any other operating system (e.g. Microsoft Windows) Linux consists of the software that manages computer hardware resources and enables you to run applications like a web browser or a text editor.
Linux is a free and open source software, which means that you are free to use the software as you like. It is distributed with the source code so users can view and modify it. This is in contrast to Microsoft Windows, a proprietary operating system.
Many versions of Linux exist. Some popular Linux distributions are Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE and the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
Linux runs on mobile phones, tablets, servers, desktops, mainframes and many other platforms. Android, a widely used operating system for mobile phones and tables is based on the Linux kernel.
